7/6/2023 0 Comments Complicated by Kristen AshleyUp first in our December FA segment is a review for Kristen’s November release, Complicated. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.Īnd as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. We love compelling voices and character-driven stories that take us away from the tedium of our lives and this month’s featured author is an expert at doing just that. Welcome, LitStackers, to our December Featured Author segment. There is also great emphasis on the religion of the time and place, with much discussion of khefts (evil spirits) and bas (souls of the dead.) Ranofer's difficulties convincing his brother to allow him to follow his passion, and his problems being heard by his elders in general, help to highlight the culture's distinct hierarchy and the relative unimportance of the young as compared with the more skilled laborers. Descriptions of Ranofer's work as a porter for the goldsmith and later as a stone cutting apprentice give strong details to illustrate the physical demands and personal dangers of the kind of work that was necessary in this society. Though Ranofer's story does not center on one specific historical event, it is rife with opportunities to learn about the daily working life of ancient Egyptian men. When Ranofer learns that Gebu's activities are even more sinister than he suspected, he and his friends Heqet and the Ancient, try to expose his wrongdoing and win Ranofer the right to choose his own destiny. Though Ranofer wants nothing more than to make beautiful items of gold, Gebu will not allow him to be apprenticed to a goldsmith, nor does he provide him with adequate food or shelter. Ranofer, an orphan, lives with his older half-brother, Gebu, who is abusive, untrustworthy, and dangerous. But does a giant even notice the crushing of a single flower? One girl is easy enough to kill. Then a mere girl fulfilled an almost forgotten prophecy and hope briefly flowered in unlikely places. The ancient Meikan people, like Cho, have lived in terror of the Addin for generations, and those who dared to stand up to its power were shunned as outlaws by their own people. Playing out between two different periods of time, 30 years apart, Cronin’s Ghost Train is an ambitious short film that’s primarily set at a long-abandoned haunted attraction. Often when authors try to balance this many disparate threads, some get lost in the shuffle it’s challenging to navigate each topic with the weight and respect they deserve, but that’s exactly what Gyasi does here–everything coheres seamlessly. Gyasi tackles grief, siblinghood, loneliness, immigration, racism, science, religion, and opioid addiction, and it feels almost too ambitious for a book under 300 pages. The thing about Transcendent Kingdom is that it has no business working as well as it does. But once I started reading I couldn’t stop I found Gyasi’s prose so inviting and mesmerising and before I knew it I’d read the whole thing and it had utterly wrecked me. I read it in under 24 hours, though it’s almost difficult to explain why: it’s not (ostensibly) a page-turner and there’s really no plot to speak of. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Ghostwriting by Traci HardingThey manage the financial and marketing side of things while you concentrate on the writing and.
7/5/2023 0 Comments Books like lightlarkLike anything, writing is a skill and you get better with practice. Also, don’t be deterred by rejections, because everyone gets rejections, including your favorite authors. This industry is about the long game, because even if you get a book deal tomorrow, it’s not going to be published for at least 2 years. I’ve been writing books since I was 12, but my main issue was I would get so excited about the possibility of being published, that I would rush the writing process and not take the time to edit. What’s your advice for other young writers like yourself?īe patient. Growing up, all I wanted to do was write young adult books, but the market just got harder and harder, and it seemed impossible for a long time. Those are the books that, no matter what was happening in my life, would transport me away. I grew up in the golden age of YA with books like Twilight, Hunger Games, Matched, Shatter Me, Legend, and An Ember in the Ashes. Part of me believes no one will guess all of the plot twists. You don’t know who is lying, everyone has a secret, and there are a ton of betrayals. There’s a line that says, “There are lies and liars all around you…” And that’s exactly what I would tell readers about the book. |
